What Is Uranium?

Uranium is a naturally occurring radioactive metal found in rocks, soil and seawater. It is one of the heaviest elements on Earth, and its unique property — fissionability — is what makes it valuable. When a uranium-235 atom is split (fissioned), it releases an extraordinary amount of energy. That energy is what powers every nuclear reactor on the planet.

In its raw form, uranium ore is mined from the ground, milled into a concentrate called yellowcake (U₃O₈), and then processed through several stages before it becomes usable nuclear fuel. Only about 0.7% of natural uranium is the fissile U-235 isotope; the rest is U-238, which is not directly fissionable in most reactors.

Why Does Uranium Matter?

The Demand Side

There are currently around 440 nuclear reactors operating in 32 countries, with roughly 60 more under construction. China alone has over 20 reactors being built and plans to double its nuclear capacity by 2030. India, the UK, France, South Korea and several Middle Eastern nations are also expanding their nuclear fleets.

On top of traditional large reactors, the development of small modular reactors (SMRs) is opening a new market. SMRs are smaller, cheaper and faster to build, making nuclear viable for countries and applications that couldn't justify a full-scale plant.

The Supply Side

Uranium is mined in a handful of countries. Kazakhstan is by far the largest producer (around 40% of global supply), followed by Canada, Namibia, Australia and Uzbekistan. Production is concentrated among a small number of companies — Kazatomprom, Cameco, Orano, and a handful of mid-cap miners.

After the Fukushima disaster in 2011, uranium prices collapsed and stayed low for a decade. Mines were shut, projects were shelved, and exploration dried up. That underinvestment means the industry now struggles to ramp up production quickly — even as demand surges.

Why Investors Care

The combination of rising demand and constrained supply has created what many analysts call a structural uranium deficit. When a commodity is in deficit, prices rise — and the companies that produce it become more profitable. That is the core investment thesis for uranium.
